The 40-Minute Timeline That Raises Major Questions in the Melissa Casias Case

Picking Up Where the Search Began

In Episode 1 of What Melissa Left, Weird True Crime hosts Gina and Amber introduced listeners to Melissa Casias, the 53-year-old Taos, New Mexico woman who vanished on June 26, 2025, after dropping off lunch for her daughter. Episode 2, "40 Minutes," moves into the days and weeks that followed, and the picture only gets murkier.

Organized Searches Begin, But Not With Mark

The morning after Melissa disappeared, her sister Trudy and niece Jazmin began organizing search efforts and reaching out to Mark Casias to coordinate. According to the family, they couldn't reach him. Meanwhile, investigators seized Mark's phone along with several other pieces of physical evidence from the home, including the muddy boots and swabs of the suspected blood found near the fish tank.

Crime scene photos taken that first day raise their own questions. A yellow work glove was found sitting in a pool of water in the bed of Mark's truck, despite there being no rain in the area for days. Tire tracks and fresh mud appeared in the yard, in an otherwise dry property. No one has explained where either the water or the mud came from.

Melissa's iCloud Was Wiped, Too

When investigators contacted Apple for Melissa's iCloud data, hoping to recover location history, texts, or call logs, the response came back empty. No devices were even linked to her account anymore. Someone hadn't just reset her physical phones, they had erased her entirely from the cloud.

This episode also digs into the marriage itself. Friends and family describe a pattern of controlling behavior from Mark, changes in Melissa's personality depending on whether he was present, and a friend's account that Melissa had confided years earlier that Mark had hit her.

The 40-Minute Coincidence

The episode's title comes from a chilling piece of timeline math. Melissa's phone was reset at 1:38 p.m. Exactly 40 minutes later, at 2:18 p.m., a person resembling Melissa was caught on surveillance footage walking along Highway 518, roughly a 43-minute walk from the Casias home. Gina and Amber walk through why that number lining up so closely with the walking distance feels far too precise to be coincidental, and why the identity of the woman in that video is still very much in question.

Life Insurance, Locked Doors, and a Change of Story

Episode 2 also covers some of the more disturbing statements Mark made in the days after Melissa went missing, including a comment about life insurance payouts made less than 48 hours into the search, and a recorded phone call in which he talks about changing the locks on the house and positioning vehicles in the driveway to block anyone from dropping Melissa off.
